Presenting BlueLab at MILE’s Learning@Law Series (Maastricht, October 2026)

On 1 October, Rohan Nanda and I opened this academic year’s Learning@Law sessions at the Maastricht Institute for Legal Education (MILE) with a presentation of BlueLab, our AI Due Diligence Lab for the Blue Economy.

BlueLab is funded by a Comenius Teaching Fellows grant from the Dutch National Education Institute (NKO). It is an elective course in the Bachelor European Law School at the Faculty of Law of Maastricht University, and it trains students to use AI responsibly in professional compliance practice.

Students work as compliance officers on fragmented ESG regulation in the blue economy. They do so with a curated legal knowledge base and with verification guardrails, so that the AI tools support their legal analysis rather than replace it. The point is to develop legal understanding and AI competences together, and to prepare students for a profession in which they will have to work with these tools critically.

Many thanks to Nicole Kornet, Sjoerd Claessens and Hester van der Kaaij for the engaging discussion and the feedback. We look forward to reporting back once the first cohort has completed the course.

You can read MILE’s own note on the session on LinkedIn, and more about the project in Maastricht University’s announcement.
