Sensemaking Worshop: AI, Regulatory Compliance, and Marine Environmental Policy

Alongside my colleague Rohan Nanda (Institute of Data Science, Maastricht University), we published a short blogpost on the sensemaking workshop we held on March 28th at Maastricht University Faculty of Law.

Our goal was simple but ambitious: to foster honest dialogue across disciplines on how AI can (or cannot) support compliance with marine environmental regulation. We brought together international and EU lawyers, climate scientists, practitioners and policy experts to explore practical regulatory challenges—from fragmented frameworks and implementation gaps to questions of trust, equity, and (weak) enforceability.

We were especially grateful for the frank exchanges. Our special thanks to the presenters Seline Trevisanut, Prof. Dr. Matthias Vanhullebusch, Wagner Menezes, Suvi-Tuuli Puharinen, Hannes Westermann, Parveen Kumar, Julia Schutz Veiga, and Pedro Vasquez.

This event forms part of our broader research project, ‘AI & Marine Environmental Policy: What Role for Automated Systems?’ and marks an important step in building a shared vocabulary—and perhaps even shared tools—for addressing marine policy challenges.

This workshop is supported by a generous grant Rohan Nanda and I received from the ELS Academy. We also thank the support given by the WeCie at Maastricht University Faculty of Law, Foundations Maastricht, and Maastricht Law & Tech Lab.
