Towards a New Environmental Law of the Sea? (TEGL Conference, 2024)

A quick throwback to the ‘Transformative Effects of Globalization and Law‘ Conference, which took place on 16 December 2024 at Maastricht University Faculty of Law.

I had the pleasure of organising and chairing the panel ‘Towards a New Environmental Law of the Sea? Navigating Legal Uncertainties in Warming Oceans’.

My presentation focused on my ongoing research into decision-making and exercises of discretion in the climate crisis, with particular emphasis on the ITLOS 2024 advisory opinion.

In this panel, I presented alongside my dear colleagues:

  • Barbara Mourão Sachett spoke about the impact of the ITLOS Climate Change Advisory Opinion on litigation in international courts and tribunals.
  • Julia Schutz Veiga discussed the role of the ITLOS Climate Change Advisory Opinion in the status of marine technology transfer.
  • Paulo Henrique Reis de Oliveira addressed maritime transport and climate change: the impact of the ITLOS Advisory Opinion.

Thank you!
