Conference Organisation: NFT-L (Narratives, Frontier Technologies, and the Law)

Tina Ishak and I are organising a three-day conference at the Maastricht University Faculty of Law: the Narratives, Frontier Technologies & the Law (NFT-L) Conference.

It’s happening from 30 October to 1 November 2024, both on-site at the Faculty and Online.

In this conference, we’ll explore the intersection of frontier technologies—artificial Intelligence, robotics, neuro-technology, biotech, genomics, blockchain—and the law, particularly how narratives—media, the arts, and public sentiment—may influence and obscure such legal developments.

We’re bringing together an incredible lineup of speakers from all over the world—from Brazil to Brunei, from Harvard to Queensland University. We’ll discuss frontier technologies and the issues they raise, from misogynistic tech biases to climate change.

Here are our highlighted keynote speakers:

  • Professor Kieran Tranter (Queensland University of Technology) will open with a keynote on how humans legislate, live with, and are changed by technology.
  • Professor Catherine Z Elgin (Harvard University) will explore the role of art and science in futurism.
  • Professor Bart Verheij (Rijksuniversiteit Groningen) will dive into stories about knowledge, data, and reasoning in AI and law.
  • Dr Pauline Phoa (Universiteit Utrecht) will discuss the hermeneutic approach to technology regulation.
  • Professor Harro van Lente (Maastricht University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences) will tackle the strategic games of new technologies and the expectations they create.
  • Dr Eduardo Gill-Pedro (Juridiska fakulteten vid Lunds universitet) will close out the conference with a thought-provoking keynote on how corporate technologies are naturalised through narratives and rights.
